Home in a Greenhouse

Home in a Greenhouse is a vision for the future of living that’s inspired by several examples around the world. It’s a design concept for a home that requires less energy for heating and cooling while providing the owners with the opportunity to grow produce year-round. It has 2,100 square feet of living area within the home, 1,200 square feet of additional space at the rooftop patio, and 2,600 square feet of floor area in the greenhouse. This house has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, which makes it perfect for a family looking to live in a place where they can grow their food and enjoy temperate weather within the greenhouse year-round.

The actual home is a simple two story structure with a wood rainscreen exterior siding and a flat roof that can be used for various purposes. This home is fully enclosed by a structural steel column and beam system with aluminum framing and laminated glass panels with bird safe fritting. The temperature and humidity within the greenhouse is controlled by both passive and active systems. From automatically operated ridge vent windows along the top of the roof that releases the hot air that naturally rises to the geothermal heating and cooling system, this house can grow plants, trees, and flowers year-round in a northern region.

Once we enter the home, there’s a large living room and kitchen where the family can come together for movie and game nights and to cook a meal. There are large sliding glass doors on both sides of the kitchen that can be opened all year. It makes it easy to get fresh produce and herbs from the gardens. As we make our way upstairs, there are several bedrooms and bathrooms that are separated by the open loft area that overlooks the kitchen. Once we get to the roof, there’s an area with an open kitchen, dining, and lounge. On the opposite side, there are sun chairs, a hammock, and a yoga studio which are all separated by planters.

This Home in a Greenhouse isn’t a new idea, but it’s one that has yet to be adopted and constructed around the world. It’s a simple concept that provides owners with the means to grow and harvest fresh food, reduce their impact on the environment, and live comfortably.
